This course will focus on the second half of the form to give returning students an opportunity to complete the course. The aim is to offer an overview of the whole art learning the form: This (or 'form') is a 10 minute sequence, developed in Beijing to make T'ai Chi accessible to a wide range of people and it is an excellent introduction to the art. It is ideal for people who wish to explore the various aspects - healing, martial and meditational - of the art. Beginners are welcome but should be aware that that the focus of the teaching of the form will be on the second half
However, the course will also include a number of simple exercises, 'Chi Kung’ that can either be used as a stand-alone practice or to explore the foundation principles developed in the form. Students are encouraged to use these exercises to build their own practice and integrate this into their daily lives. Please contact the tutor if you wish to join. Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?
Previous knowledge of the form will help. The tutor is very happy to discuss whether the course will be suitable.
By the end of the 10 week course participants will have the opportunity to:
• Develop an overview of the second half of the 24 Step form and associated exercises
• Develop an understanding of key principles
• Begin a home practice for stress relief and well-being
• Improve posture and breathing
• Develop your existing learning through practise of form and partner work (Returning learners)
About Your Tutor:
Mike Tabrett has over 30 years’ experience in these arts. He is an honorary vice-president of the T’ai Chi Union for Great Britain, has experience of training both T'ai Chi teachers and health care professionals and is a qualified Chinese Massage and Acupressure practitioner. He works extensively with local and national health care institutions. He also trains in other martial arts. He teaches Yang and Chen style T’ai Chi Chuan in all aspects and a variety of Chi Kung.

Enjoying Your Class; Health, Safety and Other Considerations.
T’ai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung are generally very safe and enjoyable activities for all involved. However any activity (especially one we are unfamiliar with) may involve risks and be enhanced by being aware of a few basic guidelines. Most of these are obvious and common sense should always be a guide – please read these notes carefully to help you.
Take It Easy!
These practises can be quite demanding even for experienced students. Make sure that your expectations of your performance are reasonable. If you are new or have had a break from classes or simply had a busy day you may take longer to achieve your full potential. We are not in a class to compete with each other – or ourselves! Be patient and build up slowly. If you feel uncomfortable at any point do feel free to sit out and watch for a while – and if necessary discuss any issues with your tutor.
Eating and Drinking
Please bring a drink to the class. These are physical activities and you may be surprised at how thirsty you get. Dehydration may make you feel unwell – for instance it may cause dizziness or tiredness.
In general it is unwise to eat too soon before or during physical activity. However if you are likely to feel hungry in a class this may become uncomfortable – we are all different in this respect. If this is true for you then try to have a light snack a few minutes before the class. If you need to eat a little during the class then make sure it is appropriate for the activity (light cereal bars are good for instance!) and that you rest whilst you are actually eating. Do not take an active part in the class if you are still eating.
Clothing & Jewellery
Try to wear appropriate clothing such as track suits and other clothing designed to allow you to move freely. Try to bring layers to a class in case you begin to feel too hot or cold.
If you prefer to practise without shoes be aware that socks can be slippery and that bare feet may be vulnerable to injury – especially if you are in a class where martial applications are a feature.
Any footwear should be well fitting and without heels.
Avoid scarves and flowing garments that may get caught up and cause obstruction whilst you are moving. Similarly as much as possible remove jewellery. Both of these are particularly important if you are involved with working with a partner.
Health and Safety Points
Please feel free to discuss any matters with your tutor, they will be able to advise you on any changes you should be making to your practise. If you are uncertain about whether you should be participating or not you should discuss this with your GP or other qualified medical practitioner as well.
Aches & Pains
If you are just embarking on a new form of physical activity you should expect a few of these of course! However you should not feel constant sharp pains as you work – especially not in your joints. This probably means that you are doing something wrong and should talk to your tutor.
Remember that over the weeks you will undergo postural changes and this will cause muscles to ache. A good example of this is aching in the lower back as we begin to work with the alignment of our pelvis – and of course the aching thigh muscles!
This term is used to cover conditions like colds and flu or any other temporary condition. Even if you are generally fit and healthy you may find that you are unable to perform to your normal abilities during an illness of this sort. You should account for this and be careful not to strain yourself. If necessary sit down for a while or arrange with your tutor to leave the class early. Be aware of the side effects of any medication you are taking (see below).
This includes a wide range of long term conditions. Should you have any of these or other chronic conditions it is wise to check with your GP or medical advisor before beginning a class. Few conditions when under treatment will stop you enjoying T’ai Chi and Chi Kung
If you need medication for a condition (such as drugs for controlling Angina or Asthma) make sure that you have these on you and that you inform your tutor where they will find them and when and how they should be administered.
Many medications have side effects that may affect you during class – for instance proprietary cold and flu controllers may make you feel drowsy. Make sure that you understand the possible effects. A Chemist will always be happy to explain these to you.
If you are on regular drug therapy make sure that you comply with any instructions given with them, for instance regarding activities you should not undertake after taking them. If you are undergoing a change in your drug routine be aware that you may experience unusual or uncomfortable feelings. You should discuss these with your GP or Chemist.
Remember to keep your tutor informed about your health issues. Remember also that you may need to remind them as they move around the class correcting students – it is not always easy to remember who has the aching back when doing this so please be patient. We are always happy to discuss these matters in confidence and will do our best to help you continue to enjoy your practise and benefit and develop from your art.
All of us learn in different ways and at a different pace. Because of this we will use a variety of approaches to help you; however we are all different in how we do learn things so we cannot guarantee that we will say or do the right things to help you. It is also true that most of us will lose our focus of attention at times and in doing so miss important points.
In this case – or if for any other reason you are not sure about something - then please ask a question; you can do so at any time. If you do not feel able to ask during the class then wait until you can talk after the class. It is perfectly in order to simply ask your teacher to revise or review something. Remember that whilst we might think that we know a movement a simple question can lead to a new understanding for both teacher and student. We will do our best to answer you straight away – although sometimes we may need time to research the answer or find a full answer within the class at some point in the future.
Your teacher may have occasion to correct your posture by physically helping you to make
adjustments. This is a traditional method in teaching T’ai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung and should not be seen as negative criticism or condemnation; it is one of the ways we deepen our understanding of the art. If for any reason you are uncomfortable with your teacher doing this – either at a particular time or generally please make us aware of this.
Classes will run to times as much as possible. Please try to be on time for your class. We do realise however that delays are unavoidable sometimes and will still be happy to see you in the class. If you are late please do not rush or panic! When you arrive give yourself time to settle in before you join in with the class – hurrying at this point does not stop you being late and could make it more likely that you will injure yourself! If for any reason you need to leave early give yourself a few minutes to settle before you leave.

- Courses with fewer than the relevant number of learners may have the option of continuing on payment of supplementary fees or the length of the course reducing.
- Upon enrolment you will receive learner information about college support and signposts to policies and regulations. If you do not have an email address please pick up a copy of the terms and conditions from the Adult Learn & Train office.
- Fees are payable in full when you enrol. We accept all major debit and *credit cards (*we do not accept American Express), cheques (made payable to Parkside Federation Academies), or cash (in person).
- Please note should you choose to withdraw from the course you will still be liable to pay any outstanding instalments.
- Refunds will only be paid in full when a class is closed at the discretion of the College, or if you cancel your enrolment at least two weeks before the course starts. If you decide to cancel less than two weeks before the course starts you will receive a 50% refund. Unfortunately we cannot offer a refund if a course has already started.
- Concessionary fees are available if you: are in receipt of the “Guaranteed Credit” element of the Pension Credit / have an income equivalent to the Government low income threshold, are in receipt of a means tested benefit or who are unemployed. Proof must be shown at enrolment, otherwise the full fee will be charged.
- If you have supplied your email address, you will receive a confirmation email following your enrolment. If the course is cancelled, we will contact you to offer an alternative or a full refund.
- Free Parking is available in the evening at all centres on a first come first serve basis. During the day spaces are extremely limited in the car park – street parking is available a short walk away. If you require accessible parking please contact the centre concerned to reserve a space.
- All college premises are strictly NO SMOKING sites, any learners wishing to smoke are asked to do so away from the immediate vicinity of the college.
